It was famously defended by Tai Telin a mistress of Pant Pratinidhi a killedar of the fort when he was captured. Vasota fort is attributed to the Kolhapur Shilahara Chief Bhoja II (1178–1193) of Panhala.[1] Vasota always remained with Marathas, Shirkes & Mores in 16th century. Shivaji incorporated the fort into Swarajya in 1655 during the conquest of Javli. Shivaji renamed the fort "Vyaghragad" (Vyaghra – means tiger), owing to its difficult natural defense. In 1818 the British bombarded the fort with heavy artillery, destroying many buildings on Vasota (Chandika mandir, Daru-kothar, etc.) and looted property worth 5 lakhs. The fort is in dilapidated condition and is overgrown. The remnants of Shree Mahadev mandir and the plinth of a huge "sadar" (discussion place) are there.[2] It is a protected natural reserve. Vasota Fort is located about 70 km from satara near Bamnoli village on the banks of Shivsagar lake.

One of the best trekking experience ever. Nature at its best. You need to take a long 90 mins boat ride to reach the fort so leave as early as possible because you have to leave the fort by 4 pm. Do not throw plastic bottles because it effects the natural beauty of the fort and you are charged 500 for it. Carry a few energy bar and some chocolates.

The silence, the green cover, boating in Koyana backwaters, Zero tolerance towards plastic.. experience was so refreshing. Feels like nature will heal you, instill a calmness in you. Must experience this. After boating for around an hour we reached at the base of Vasota.. Then a very enjoyable trekk of around one and half hours, witnessing beautiful dense green forest cover of Sahyadri Wyaghra Prakalp (Sahyadri Tiger Reserve)... Fort closes at 3-4 PM, everyone should leave after 4 PM no matter what. Boating is fun as well as risky if heavy winds find you in the middle of Koyana waters.. We survived somehow.

Vasota also known as Vyaghragad, is situated in a most bio diversed forest, falling under Sahyadri Tiger Reserve, Satara. Vasota fort has been under the Maratha rule after the conquest of Javali in 1655. After 1818 the British destroyed many buildings and fortress of the fort. The fort is now in dilapidated condition. There are few remains of few old buildings, Maruti and Mahadev Mandir, few water tanks, broken entrance gate, etc. The view of Nageshwar Cave and the cliffs of Shayadri Mountain ranges from Babu kada is amazing. As the fort fall under tiger reserve there is a fixed time to visit the fort and we need to take permission from forest office at Bamnoli before we commence the trek. From Bamnoli we need to take a 1.5 hours boat ride to reach the base of the fort. The boat remains at the base. On the way to the top there is an old Hanuman Mandir, few remains of some small old stone structure believed to be memorial structures. Recently the forest department has taken lot of efforts to lay steps and make markings of the trek route. From the base we need to terk for approximately 1.5 to 2 hours under the canopy of dense forest to reach the top of the fort. Now stay on the fort is not allowed and hence we need to be back by 4:00 pm to catch the boat back to Bamnoli. Overall a must visit place for Trekkers and nature lovers....!

It's a great experience for treaking here, if you're a trek enthusiastic but you will need a good amount of will power to complete it ! You have many options to reach the fort ,you can just google them , govt has taken alot of steps to keep the environment clean so you won't be able to take any plastic bags/bottels in the fort .
