Earth5R is located in Mumbai, India on Sun Glory, Hillside Cooperative Society, Raheja Vihar, Chandivali, Andheri East. Earth5R was founded by Saurabh Gupta who quit his job at Cafe Coffee Day India to bicycle around different countries, riding more than 50,000 kms in little more than two years. Over the course of his journey, he felt the need of citizens’ involvement in sustainable development against the increasing environmental risks which inspired him to launch Earth5R. The 5Rs refer to our 5 Earth values: Respect, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Restore. The team is made of a global network of interns and volunteers who have a passion for the environment. Each of our team members has their own story about why they volunteer. We’re extremely lucky to have a team of dedicated partners that come out and build the projects. They are not just volunteers but new age Social Entrepreneurs who have taken the responsibility of building the change they wanted to see. Earth5R has developed an ambitious Green Citizen Model which aims to make India sustainable by engaging citizens, volunteers, marginalized communities, governments, and corporates into a comprehensive sustainable development program. Saurabh says that Green Citizens is not just a sentimental vision of Earth5R, the world needs a participative model and it’s urgent! Now the team initiated a program called “ACT Powai” which stands for “Action, Collaboration, Transformation”. Its objective is to lift the spirit of our neighbourhood by inspiring all Powai inhabitants to contribute to positive change, become involved and start doing – because a community of people who care deeply for one another and the environment in which they live is good for everyone. This project will take 2 years. In that time Powai will become a sustainable neighbourhood, if the goals of Vision Green Sustainable Powai, as set out by Earth5R, are met. Earth5R is the place for you if you are really into working for the environment and social development. The organisation values ideas and hardwork. I am an intern at Earth5R and on my very first day of my internship I got a hands-on experience on the field during the solid waste management training.

I am fairly new at Earth5R, and I am still extremely confident about the methods which they use to educate people about sustainability and waste management. The volunteers and interns personally train citizens via offline and online means about their Home Equals Planet and build a network of highly thoughtful and aware citizens. They also step into slums and train local communities about upcycling and help them earn through the products they make. This I think is a great strategy to solve environmental as well as humanitarian problems. They also lay a huge emphasis on waste management and training people to generate less waste from their homes and make sustainable actions in their daily life. Personally as an intern, I have had great experience in conducting trainings for their Home Equals Planet project and contribute to educate people about the actions that we as individuals can take to make our lives better and more sustainable.

As an intern for Earth5R for the past few month, I have found the experience both enjoyful and fulfilling. Through my experiences, I have seen firsthand the positive effect writing articles and performing citizen science projects can have on the community! From participating in the development of the waste management project to writing articles on environmental issues plaguing our world today, my knowledge has drastically increased under Earth5R. I am glad to be a part of such a wonderful organisation, working here is purely satisfying and I have learned so much about management, team work and leadership in the last 5 months. Interning at Earth5R has given me the confidence to accept my mistakes and come up with even better solutions and results. Earth5R is a place that will make you happy, whilst teaching you skills that cannot be taught inside any classroom.
