Hirakud Dam is built across the Mahanadi River, about 15 kilometres (9 mi) from Sambalpur in the state of Odisha in India. Behind the dam extends a lake, Hirakud Reservoir, 55 km (34 mi) long. It is one of the first major multipurpose river valley projects started after India's independence.
The power house of the longest dam has a well established power generation systems. Most of the turbines are kaplan and few turbines are Francis. You need special permission to visit the power house, but if you get one please do visit. The staff are also friendly to explain all the engineering equipment in the power house.
