I like this place because at present there are 17 atomic power stations in INDIA . The importance of nuclear energy to meet the long term energy needs of the country was felt quite early in 1955.
This Atomic Power Station has the distinction of being the First indegeniously Constructed Atomic Power Station. There are Two Units with a Capacity of generating 220 MW Power. They became Operational from 1983 and 1985. This Power Station is a Integrated Facility comprising Nuclear Power Production, Reprocessing of Fuel and Waste Management facility. But Unit has also mired in many controversies, incidents of leaking of Heavy Water resulting in Radiation beyond acceptable levels. There were many protests too. But major plus point is this Facility is almost continuously Operating with very few stoppages, unlike the recently commissioned Kudamkulam Plant which is plagued by defects resulting in frequent Stoppage.

It is also India's first fully indigenously constructed nuclear power station, with two units each generating 220 MW of electricity. The first and second units of the station went critical in 1983 and 1985 respectively. The station has reactors housed in a reactor building with double shell containment improving protection also in the case of a loss-of-coolant accident. An Interim Storage Facility (ISF) is also located in Kalpakkam.
