This was one of the important fights between British imperial force and Russia to gain control over the central Asia . The war was fought in between 1839 ad to 1842 . The first battle the afgan leader Dost Moammad was imprisoned and Shah Shujah enthroned . During the second war 1841ad to 1842 ad Shah Shujah was killed and Dost Muhammad was enthroned in 1843ad Both the two parties British and tribal afgans suffered huge loss . Due to extreme cold weather British could no cope up with the climate. This was an impotence war where the British suffered loss. The tower was built in memory of the war .

This is not open to the public. Historically, this was erected to commemorate the martyrs of the Afghan war which the British lost dearly. A rare defeat of the great empire indeed. However, inspite of this hard lesson their attitude towards the Indians was least changed. The names inscribed on the memorial didn't have the name of a single Indian soldier. Nevertheless, not long ago, the Indian govt replaced the names with those of the Indian martyrs. The lane beside the memorial is called Memorial lane which is also rare if not unique.
It is located next to the Dum Dum Ordnance Factory. It is dedicated to the fallen British soldiers of the First Anglo –Afghan War in India. The tower is whitish in colour looks like a Shahed Minar. The Dum Dum Ordnance Factory was set up, following the defeat of the British in the Afghan War, when the British East India Company decided to set up the first ammunition factory in India.
