ARMY OPENS ITS DOORS FOR CITIZENS TO VISIT FORT WILLIAM Fort William is an iconic structure which is synonymous with the history of Kolkata. Made from brick and mortar, it spans over an area of 70.9 hectares and features an irregular octagonal shape, three sides of which face the Hooghly River. The construction was completed in 1781 at a cost of approximately two million pounds. Used initially for accommodating British troops, it today serves as the Headquarters of Eastern Command, Indian Army. On the occasion of Army Day 2020 it was announced that select portions of Fort William will be open to the citizens of Kolkata as part of an organized Historical tour. The aim of this initiative is to further the bonds between the military and the citizens of Kolkata. Every Sunday visitors will be allowed on a guided tour of the Fort to include its museum, historical buildings and other such artefacts. Thank You Army Commander Eastern Command!!!!
