The organization's name “Awalkhana” is inspired from a sampler created by women of Bihar who practiced Kashida- the most ancient and traditional form of intrinsic art of thread work and embroidery known to be practiced in Bhojpur region of Bihar, Irkal in Karnataka and Kashmir. At Awalkhana, we are committed to understanding Everyday Heritage which comprises a legacy of tangible and intangible attributes of the past, inherited and conserved for future generations. Everyday heritage is the heritage in the private domain of people, its tangible forms housed and locked in their households, kinship and families strung together by the intangible thread of memory, folklore, legends, myths and other such narratives. Deeply imbedded in everyday life, routinized and internalized by its mundane (daily), the cycle of creation and recreation of everyday heritage seamlessly escapes recognition.
