This is where I learned pancharimelam, taught by Kalamandalam Sivadasan. Many talented artists are made here. Maintaining the old and valuable art forms of Kerala. Kalanilayam is also a place for cultural meetings. Young and talented artists stay and study here. The main art form taught here is kathakali.

The institution was established in 1955 in memory of Unnayivariyar, renowned writer of Nalacharitham. It is governed by a body of 12 persons elected from the general council consisting of 102 life members. Former prime minister of Cochin Panampilly Govinda Menon inaugurated the centre. The centre offers courses in Kathakali vesham, Kathakali music, Kathakali chenda, Kathakali maddalam, Kathakali chutty, Kappupani, Classical music, Violin, Bharathanatyam, Mohiniattam and Kuchipudi.
