It is a great place. It was the first time in Indian history that an Asian country defeated a European naval force. The Dutch never recovered from the defeat and no longer posed a large colonial threat to India. This war happened here. Be proud by visiting

The historic side of Colachel has long been overlooked, despite its significance in the Battle of Colachel which was fought on 10th August, 1741 between the Indian Kingdom of Travancore and the Dutch East India Company , during the Travancore-Dutch War. Travancore, under the king Anizham Thirunal Marthanda Varma defeated the Dutch East India Company. The Travancore forces imprisoned them in the Udayagiri fort. Later, Marthanda Varma asked them to join the Travancore Army. Several European prisoners , including Eustachius De Lannay accepted the offer and served the Travancore Kingdom. The defeat of the Dutch by Travancore is considered the earliest example of an organised power from Asia overcoming European military technology and tactics. Marthanda Varma recorded this conquest with a 'Victory Pillar' erected near the Colachel beach , 68 km south of Thiruvananthapuram. Every year, Indian Army celebrates the anniversary of Colachel Battle.
