The Research Department is engaged in Research and Development work for incorporating state-of-art technology in Radio & Television Broadcasting. The functions of the Research Department include Research and Development of equipment required by AIR and Doordarshan, investigation and studies relating to AIR and Doordarshan, development of Prototype models of R&D equipment for limited use field trials in the network of AIR and Doordarshan. The Television service in India was started by All India Radio in 1 November 1959 on experimental basis in its Research Department. The regular daily transmission began in 1965.
