It was established in 1980 as a fully financed institution by government of Uttar Pradesh which is presently being looked after by a separate management committee. As a result of this development the original name as Kamla Nehru Institute of Science and Technology has also been rechristened as Kamla Nehru Institute of Physical and Social Sciences.
