Nalanda University was a Buddhist university established in 450 AD during the Gupta period It was an eminent centre of learning long before Oxford, Cambridge & Europe's oldest university Bologna were founded. For over 800 years, Nalanda was one of the best universities in the world It once accommodated over 10,000 students, mostly Buddhist monks from China, Japan, Korea & over 2,000 faculty. It had the greatest libraries spread over 3 buildings, each 9 stories high with an enormous collection of books Library was so extensive that it burned for months when set aflame by Turkish Muslim invaders in 1193 Thousand of monks were burnt alive or killed. Black soot can be seen on the remaining walls of the monasteries spread over an area of 14 hectares. The red-brick ruins include 9 monasteries & 4 temples that face each other A Hindu temple, designated as Temple 2 is behind the rear wall of monasteries 7 & 8. Most impressive is the Great Stupa (No 3), with steps & terraces
